Levels and Contributing Factors of Stress among Primary School Teachers in Johor Bahru District

Abstract

This study aims to identify the level of stress and examine the influence of factors such as relationships with colleagues, workload, time constraints, and student behaviour on stress levels among teachers at a primary school in the Johor Bahru district. The study employed a survey method, with data collected through a questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale. The questionnaire used was adapted from a survey by Fazura Mohd Noor (2011). The constructed questionnaire consists of three sections: Section A (Respondent Demographic Information), Section B (Teacher Stress Level), and Section C (Teacher Stress Factors). The reliability coefficient (Cronbach's Alpha) for the instrument used was 0.968. According to the sample size determination table by Krejcie and Morgan (1970), a total of 44 teachers were randomly selected as respondents for this study. The data processing involved descriptive statistics, including frequency measurements, mean scores, standard deviation, and percentages. Data were also processed using multiple regression analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The findings indicate that the overall level of stress among teachers was low, with a mean = 2.30 and standard deviation = 0.706. The factors of relationships with colleagues, workload, time constraints, and student behaviour significantly predicted teacher stress with R² = 0.532, F(4, 36) = 10.237, p < 0.05. The most dominant factor influencing the level of stress among teachers in the school was relationships with colleagues, Beta = 0.348, p < 0.05.
