The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education continues to expand, including in the field of Islamic Education. ChatGPT, as an AI-powered application based on natural language processing, demonstrates strong potential as a learning support tool that can enhance students’ understanding, motivation and skills. This study aims to explore the impact of ChatGPT usage among undergraduate students in Islamic Education through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by the PRISMA 2020 protocol. The literature search was conducted using databases such as DOAJ, ERA, and ERIH Plus, employing keywords such as “ChatGPT,” “AI” and “Islamic Education.” A total of 14 studies were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria, consisting of empirical research and literature reviews published between 2022 and 2025. Findings reveal that ChatGPT contributes to improved understanding of fiqh concepts, stimulates critical thinking and supports self-directed learning among students. However, several challenges have been identified, including technological dependence, ethical concerns and limitations in conveying spiritual values. The findings further suggest the need for a collaborative approach between educators and technology to maintain a balance between academic excellence and character development. This study concludes that the integration of ChatGPT into Islamic Education holds significant potential, yet it must be governed by principles of ethical conduct, pedagogical wisdom and value-based education.
