GEMA-ADHD: The Potential of Gemini in Designing Edutainment Materials for Students with ADHD

This concept paper presents the GEMA-ADHD Framework (Gemini–Edutainment–Multimodal–Adaptive for ADHD), a conceptual framework that explains the potential of Google DeepMind’s Gemini generative artificial intelligence model to support special education teachers in designing appropriate edutainment materials for students with special educational needs (SEN) who have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Students in this category experience various cognitive, emotional, and behavioural challenges that may hinder their active engagement in conventional learning environments. The framework integrates four main components: Universal Design for Learning as the foundation for accessibility and flexibility; Cognitive Load Theory as a guide for managing stimuli and information processing; Self-Determination Theory as the basis for motivation; and Gemini’s multimodal capabilities as a content-generation support tool. Specifically, this paper describes several practical applications of Gemini, including the development of Differentiated Learning Daily Lesson Plans, the preparation of Individualised Education Plans incorporating edutainment-based interventions, the generation of social stories using Gems Storybook, the design of visual materials and educational game applications through Gemini Canvas, the production of various teaching and learning materials through NotebookLM integration, and the development of assessment materials such as quizzes and edutainment-based assignments. Practical implications and directions for future research are also discussed.
