Abstract

This study aims to contextually explore the role of institutions of higher learning in shaping the Muslim character (sahsiah Muslim) among undergraduate students of Islamic Education (SHPI) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). A qualitative approach using a case study design was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with four lecturers and four students from different years of study. Thematic analysis revealed six key factors contributing to the development of Muslim character: (1) comprehensive curriculum and teaching, (2) Islamic campus environment, (3) the role of lecturers as murabbi and role models, (4) student engagement in community service, (5) continuous assessment and student feedback, and (6) guidance and advice embedded in teaching. The findings indicate that character development among Muslim students is shaped through the synergy of educational systems, campus surroundings, lecturer influence, and active student participation. The study recommends that higher education institutions adopt holistic strategies grounded in Islamic values to produce morally upright and competitive Muslim educators for the future.
